June 2015-Justine and Alan
Villa Fontanella turned out to be much more than we hoped for on our first trip to Tuscany.
It is nestled in a lovely, quiet valley with lush forest to the back and front and a river flowing by.
The house is very spacious with large bedrooms and three living rooms, one of them enormous with one long wall of glass doors, overlooking the patio - a fabulous and very relaxing space.
Traditionally restored and decorated, the whole place has a very relaxed feel and is very comfortable.
The house is surrounded by several sunny meadows and we spent most of our time in the grounds (with over 25 acres the neighbours are very far away!), the swimming pool (good size) and wandering the nearby hills and villages.
About 15 -20 minute walk up the hill from Villa Fontanella is a mediaeval village (borgo) of Coreglia Antelminelli. A lovely, authentic place, with just a few tourists, but with stunning views all around it, narrow cobbled streets and beautiful buildings. Coreglia has several nice restaurants and shops, including a butchers, pharmacy and a minimarket that offers home delivery (very helpful in our case).
Jonathan and Simona are the nicest hosts. As we didn't have a car, Jonathan very kindly picked us up from the Ghivizzano train station and gave us a lift back at the end. After a warm welcome, they left us be for the whole week, returning the day before the end of our stay. We were sorry we didn’t spend more time talking to them – they have fascinating stories of their renovations of monasteries, water mills and houses.
We had a fantastic time and much needed rest .
Simona and Jonathan very generously arranged for us to have the most fabulous weather all week! The time flew by much too quickly and in hindsight we wished we would have stayed at Villa Fontanella for the two weeks we were in Italy, instead of just one. We’ll know better for next time!!
With warm wishes
